FTP Publishing

This tutorial covers how to upload your files via FTP to your account on World Mall (upload refers to the transporting of files from your computer to a computer located on the Internet). This tutorial will not cover how to create your HTML files.

Reviewing FTP Basics

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a method of sending files over the Internet. In order to use FTP to transfer your files across the Internet, you will need FTP software.

Finding FTP Software

Many different FTP software programs are available. You may find an FTP program bundled with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) software package. If you don't have an FTP program, you can download one from the Internet. There are several good programs available, including freeware and shareware versions-we've provided links below to FTP software that you can download by using your browser.

Configuring Your FTP Software

Follow the basic steps below to get your site up and running by using one of the various FTP programs available, such as WS_FTP or CuteFTP. After reading this tutorial, you should be able to configure your own FTP client to work with World Mall. If you need additional help, refer to one of the more in-depth tutorials below.

Preparing before You Begin Using FTP

Before you start, in addition to having the original files, you should back up your site files somewhere on your hard drive or on an external source like a floppy disk or a Zip disk. This ensures that you will always have a back-up copy in the event that you experience a system crash. You may then copy these back-up files to your working folder and resume your work. If you haven't already, you may want to consider making this practice a habit.

Configuring Your FTP Client Software

Next, you will need to configure your FTP software. Here we will show you how to set up two Windows programs-CuteFTP and WS_FTP. If you use other FTP clients, the process may vary slightly and the field headings may differ, but the main concepts presented here will apply. In that case, you will have to identify the corresponding-but different-field headings to make this information applicable.

CuteFTP 4.0 Users

1. Open CuteFTP. A Site Settings window should open. (If you already have CuteFTP open and the Site settings window is not open, from the File menu, select Site Manager.)

2. Select the Predefined Sites folder and click New. A New Site file will appear at the bottom of the window. Select it.

3. Under Label for site, enter the file name that you want to use for your World Mall FTP sessions. (This will be where all the configuration information you are entering as you follow these steps is saved.)

This next step is extremely important!

4. Under FTP Host Address, enter your server name (you will find this in the Welcome email you recieved). Although your number may be different, the Server name will look like this: 216.251.111.111.

5. Under FTP site User Name, enter your World Mall username. (Enter it exactly as you see it in the welcome email.)

6. Under FTP site Password, enter your World Mall password.(Enter it exactly as you see it in the welcome email.)

7. Leave the FTP site connection port with the default entry (for example, it may have the number 21).

8. For Login type, select Normal.

9. Click Edit. Under the General tab, make sure that the Host Type has Auto-Detect selected. You may leave the other fields as they are.

10. Select the Advanced tab and make sure that Transfer type has Auto-Detect selected. You may leave the other fields as they are.

11. Click OK; click connect. When the Login Messages box appears, click OK.

12. Your World Mall site directory will appear in the window on the right side. CuteFTP is now ready to upload your files.

You may now proceed to upload your files to your World Mall Site. If your FTP utility is working properly, when you connect to World Mall you will be directly accessing the directory containing your files. You will be able to see the files that are in your directory, and upload, delete, rename and download your files. If you have any further questions, please email us at support@worldmallhosting.com

8. Click Apply; click OK.

At this point, depending on how you have configured your ISP software, it may attempt to connect to your World Mall account.

9. Be sure to select Auto in the main window under Remote Site.

10. If you are not connected, click Connect. WS_FTP is now ready to upload your files.

You may now proceed to upload your files to your World Mall Site. If your FTP utility is working properly, when you connect to World Mall you will be directly accessing the directory containing your files. You will be able to see the files that are in your directory, and upload, delete, rename, and download your files. If you have any further questions, please email us at support@worldmallhosting.com.
